Honoring Prematurity Awareness Month: The Role of Breastfeeding in Supporting Preterm Babies
November is Prematurity Awareness Month, a time to shine a light on the challenges and triumphs faced by families of preterm infants. Preterm birth, defined as birth before 37 weeks of gestation, affects about 1 in 10 babies in the United States. For African American families, the rate is disproportionately higher, highlighting a critical area for awareness and action.
At the African American Breastfeeding Coalition of Oregon (AABCO), we recognize the vital role breastfeeding plays in improving outcomes for preterm babies. Breast milk is often referred to as "liquid gold," and for preemies, it can be life-saving. Breastfeeding provides essential nutrients, antibodies, and growth factors that help protect against infections, support brain development, and reduce the risk of complications like necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC).
However, breastfeeding a preterm infant comes with unique challenges. Many mothers may face difficulties with milk supply, latching, or maintaining breastfeeding while their baby is in the NICU. At AABCO, we aim to support these families by:
Promoting Awareness: Educating communities about the benefits of breastfeeding for preterm infants.
Providing Support: Offering culturally specific resources and lactation support tailored to the needs of African American families.
Advocating for Equity: Addressing systemic barriers that impact breastfeeding rates and access to care in our communities.
Prematurity Awareness Month reminds us of the resilience of families and the power of support networks in overcoming challenges. By working together, we can ensure that every preterm baby has the best possible start to life, and that every mother feels empowered and supported in her breastfeeding journey.
If you or someone you know needs support, AABCO is here to help. Together, we can nurture healthier beginnings for our littlest community members. To get connected to culturally specific lactation support, please contact us.
